Matter of Time by Vida Meić

For one week, Holographik Space was home to Matter of Time, a solo exhibition by Croatian visual artist Vida Meić, organised together with SHPIGL. Meić works in deep intaglio print and installation, and her subject is time itself — how something as fluid and changeable as the experience of a passing moment can be recorded on paper and held in an object. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, where she now works as an assistant and is completing doctoral research on the same question. Her work has been recognised with the Erste Grand Prix and the MSU Award, and is held in the collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb.

SHPIGL is a Zagreb curatorial platform for contemporary art, working with Croatian artists across exhibitions and fairs. Open to everyone and free to visit, the exhibition brought together graphic works, sculptural objects, a public opening and an artist talk, inviting visitors to experience the work beyond a traditional gallery setting.

The opening evening gave visitors the opportunity to meet Vida in person and hear more about the ideas, research and creative process behind the exhibition.

Artini, Talks with a Twist

Joined by curator Kristina Stakor as part of the first edition of Artini, Talks with a Twist, the conversation offered a closer look at the work while creating space for questions, discussion and different perspectives. Stakor is a curator and cultural journalist who writes for VIZKULTURA, the Croatian platform for visual culture, where she has spent years interviewing artists, designers and curators. That showed in the evening: less presentation, more conversation, with the audience joining in.

Why it belongs here

We believe people connect with art differently when they can hear the story behind it, ask questions and meet the artist in a relaxed setting. Bringing together exhibitions, artist talks, music and our bar program allows us to create evenings where art becomes part of a wider cultural experience. That is what we built the Space for. Work like this needs somewhere to go in Zagreb that is neither an institution nor a private collection — open on the street, free to walk into, and full of people who came in for a coffee and left having spent an hour with an artist’s work. Our part is the Space, the production and the programme around it; the work itself belongs to the artist. Thank you to Vida Meić for trusting us with Matter of Time, and to SHPIGL for bringing it here.
