Why Holographik Space Exists

Design, Culture & Community

A full room at Holographik Space during an opening

Holographik Space was set up as a platform for design, culture and community. That is the sentence we use when someone asks what this is, and it is accurate, but it does not describe a room. The room is 180 m² in Trešnjevka. Through the day it runs on specialty coffee, tables and laptops. At five the laptops close and the cocktail list comes out, and on a good number of nights the whole floor gets emptied and rebuilt for something else: an exhibition, a listening session, a talk, a screening, a pop-up, a dinner, a concert.

That second half is the reason the first half exists. A café pays for itself. A programme does not, at least not at the start, and it is the programme we opened for. Every partition, every piece of furniture and every light in here moves, because a room that cannot be rebuilt can only ever hold one kind of evening.

What we put into that room is meant to widen what people run into. Exhibitions, talks, workshops, listening sessions, screenings: the formats change, the intention does not. We want to give people access to experiences, ideas and conversations they would not otherwise come across, because exposure to work that is not your own is what moves both a practice and a person along. It reads like a low bar and it is a hard one, since it means programming for what the city could use rather than for what fills a room fastest.

Some of it is ours from the first idea to the last glass. Some of it arrives from outside: a festival brings an artist, a brand brings a launch, a studio brings a collection, and we build and run the night around it. Either way the audience gets the same thing, which is an evening that was designed rather than assembled. What has already happened here is in projects.

The other half of it is who ends up standing next to whom. People come through here from a wide range of creative and professional backgrounds, and regular events, meetups and shared projects put them in the same room often enough that things start. A fair number of collaborations have come out of this floor: someone meets a person from their own field, or a person from a completely different one, and a conversation turns into work.

None of it runs on its own. Every visit, every ticket and every evening someone turns up to feeds straight back into the programme, and it is what lets us invest further into what comes next. That is not a courtesy line. The support of the people who come is what makes the next exhibition, the next listening session and the next collaboration possible.

Holographik Space is a place where ideas get shared, relationships get built and new perspectives get introduced. Every programme, event and initiative adds to a growing creative community and to a stronger culture of design in Zagreb. That is why Holographik Space exists.
